Local animal economies during the nineteenth-century caravan trade along the Lower Pangani, northeastern Tanzania: a zooarchaeological perspective

The expansion of the caravan trade in eastern Africa during nineteenth century is considered to have had significant ecological, economic and social consequences. While available historical documentary oral sources provide valuable evidence concerning scale, timing spatial extent these, as well information about some key actors agents, there remain gaps that potential be filled by targeted archaeological research. This paper presents one such study, which aims establish how influential was on local animal economies, with particular reference a sample known halts northern route Pangani River, Tanzania. results zooarchaeological analysis faunal assemblages recovered from four sites suggest impacts may been less than has often argued historians. study also provides fresh insight continuing importance wild resources, especially rodents, diets late herd management strategies.
